Replacing the D90, the Nikon D7000 brings its share of innovations and improvements and raises the bar a little higher for the range of expert SLRs. A new reference is born.
The latest addition to the “amateur” range of DSLRs, the Nikon D7000 is aimed at expert and experienced amateurs. It is therefore very close to the semi-professional and professional universe, all for a more affordable price than the professional range of Nikon. It is now in a kit with a stabilized 18-105 mm lens around the € 1,300.

Flagship brand of DSLR with Canon, Nikon offers with its D7000 a very successful camera. Author of a reference device with the D90 , the Japanese manufacturer goes even further with its D7000. The SLR is based (among other things) on a new generation of 16 million pixel CMOS sensor in APS-C format , a new autofocus system, a 39-point targeting system.
A special feature directly from the professional world, the presence of a double port for SD memory cards ( SD / SDHC / SDXC ). This double SD slot makes it possible to double for image security, to pass transparently from one to the other in the event of overflow, to dedicate a card in jpeg format, and another in RAW format, or even devote one to the photo and another to the video. The D7000 also has a small switch placed just next to the LCD screen on the back of the device to switch in a helping hand from optical aiming to Live View (direct aiming by the screen). Video shooting is only possible with the latter.
Screen
The LCD screen with a diagonal of 3 inches (7.6 cm) offers a definition of 920,000 points. Small disappointment compared to the competition (including the Canon 60D ). In use, it proves pleasant by its precision, its fidelity and its luminosity.
Like all rather high-end devices, the LCD status screen finds its place on the top top of the device. Always very practical to have, at a quick glance, an overview of the parameters. Given the range of possibilities offered, the menus are logically very dense. Navigation is not a problem in itself, but learning time for full exploration may be necessary before fully mastering the device.
Body
The manufacturing quality is there, a habit at Nikon. With a magnesium alloy body covered with good quality plastic, and a non-slip coating around the handle, the Nikon D7000 offers robustness and good grip. The advancement of the handle, quite generous, will suit most hands. Nikon tropicalizes its case, to ensure the D7000 resistance to dust and humidity. This results in the presence of a seal on most hatches. The whole is paid for by a relatively large weight. The Nikon D7000 is not the lightest digital SLR.
Use
The ergonomics are also, not surprisingly, very good. All of the control buttons are perfectly distributed on the housing. Most of the essential functions for using the D7000 are immediately accessible and clearly identified. We find the shortcut buttons on the left side of the screen (Viewing, Trash, Menu, Info / White balance, Zoom – / focus area / sensitivity, Zoom + / Image quality). Nikon did not skimp on the technique. The D7000 offers a new autofocus system that relies on 39 collimators. As a direct result, the device reacts quarter-turn. The focus has always been very fast, even in low light conditions. In Live View, the D7000 is less efficient but remains above the rest. For burst mode, the D7000 offers a very honest frame rate of 6 frames per second.
Image & Video
The D7000 captures excellent quality images. The 16 million pixel sensor managed by Nikon electronics works wonders. Whether in terms of details, precision, exposure, contrast or white balance; it is difficult to take this reflex in default. The noise management “made in Nikon” is once again there. The entire sensitivity range (ISO 100 to 6400) is fully usable.
The first SLR to offer video, the D90 has since been joined by an armada of competitors. The most famous of them is undoubtedly the Canon 5D Mark II for its success. Today, all DSLRs (from a certain range) offer this functionality. The D7000 is no exception to the rule with a Full HD mode in 24p (1920 x 1080 pixels) and HD 720p in 25 fps (1280 x 720 pixels). The encoding is done in H.264 for an MPEG4 format. For sound capture, the D7000 has an external input for connecting a microphone. Functional in video mode, autofocus can hardly be recommended for scenes with a lot of movement. The quality of the video sequences is matched by that of the photos. Without achieving their excellence, they are of a very good standard.
Building on the very successful D90, Nikon delivers a very attractive D7000 which improves its on-board technology to perfect the functionalities offered. Comfortable handling, reassuring weight (even if it can be qualified as a defect for some), performance at the rendezvous with a very good image quality in the end. The Nikon D7000 is a reference camera.
