Like any replacement in a range, the D3100 bring a lot of innovations starting with the CMOS sensor of 14.2 million pixels in APS-C format (the D3000 was satisfied with a 10 MP). A sensor that offers LiveView (direct view) via the 3-inch (7.6 cm) LCD screen. The latter does not evolve compared to the Nikon D3000, and displays only a definition of 230,000 pixels. It is little compared to what most competitors offer , even some high-end compacts.
Another appearance, Full HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels) in 24p. It goes back to 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) if you want to film at 30 fps. The video mode benefits from continuous focusing. Capabilities which are undoubtedly not unrelated to the arrival of the Expeed2 image processing processor. For storing photos and videos, the D3100 opens to SDHC and SDXC memory cards , in addition to SD
The pure and hard technological aspect is not the only aspect to benefit from improvement. The D3100 gives up all the plastic of the old entry-level models of Nikon, and sees the appearance of non-slip rubber coating (thumb rest and advanced handle). This is an undeniable gain in terms of comfort of handling. Despite the still omnipresent presence of plastic, the D3100 has a very good finish. These choices have an advantage: the weight. The D3100 thus remains a compact and light reflex. This is not negligible if we plan to transport it over the long term. On the flip side, its small size will hinder large hands. And in general, the little finger swims in a vacuum.
In use, the D3100 does not differ much from the D3000. The same commands can be found on both sides of the screen (Viewing, Menu, Zoom -, Zoom -, Info, Quad-directional pad, Trash bin) with the notable appearance of the command for the LiveView and the triggering of the video. The latter takes the form of a trigger (very pleasant to use) with a central button. Another addition, a selector just below my mode selection. It allows a boost or index to choose its training mode, or switch to the self-timer.
The D3100 retains the same 11-point autofocus system from the D3000. We could also have hoped for an improvement on this side, but we must admit that the SLR does not suffer. It proves to be perfectly reactive in the development. Do not expect to do sports photography. The D3100 remains a device for general public use, and a very good approach to SLR photography.
The image quality is simply excellent. With the help of the Expeed2 processor, Nikon improves noise management, which is already exemplary on the D3000. Where, the latter peaked in normal sensitivity at ISO 1600, the D3100 climbs to ISO 3200 with perfectly contained noise up to ISO 1600. It becomes slightly noticeable at ISO 3200, but the pictures remain of high quality. Nikon once again demonstrates its expertise in the field. A mastery that the manufacturer does not reserve for its more upscale models. This is a very good point.
With the stabilized 18-55 mm lens supplied in the kit, the D3100 already provides very good, precise and detailed shots. The colorimetry remains faithful, just like the white balance. This is excellent for an entry level SLR.
We find on the D3100, all the features specific to Nikon. Let us quote: the D-Lightning balance the details in the dark areas of a high contrast image, the RAW format (NEF), the integrated retouching of images
Like the D3000 in its time, the D3100 is therefore a real success. Rather simple and intuitive to use with its on-board guide, it is perfect for everyday family use. It will also satisfy people who want to take their first step in the world of SLR photography. The noise management particularly appealed to us.
