Best Asus P3B Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

For Asus, the P3B video projector is quite simply the brightest portable model on the market, which we have been able to verify, but is that enough to prevail?

Presentation

The Asus P3B video projector is a serious competitor to the Qumi Q3 Plus and the Philips Picopix PPX4935. Except for one detail: the Asus model has a short focal length. It is thus placed between the sofa and the wall, typically on a coffee table. For the rest, the P3B is a WXGA DLP video projector (1280 x 800 px) using LEDs as a light source. The manufacturer announces a maximum brightness of 800 lumens. It also has a 12,000 mAh battery providing 3 hours of autonomy which can also be used as an external battery to recharge a device such as a smartphone.

The manufacturer announces a lifespan of the LEDs of 30,000 hours (far greater than the 6,000 to 10,000 hours of conventional lamps) and a noise of 32 dB (A). The Asus P3B is sold for around 650 €.

2D image quality

This Asus P3B video projector is equipped with a short focal fixed optic which allows to project an image of 2 meters basic with a recoil of only 1.5 meters, while it takes a recoil of 3 meters with a conventional video projector. The optics offer no specific adjustment, neither zoom nor  lens-shift . The Asus P3B displays a sharp image, even at the edges. However, the image (2 m basic in our case) lacks precision compared to a Full. HD model due to the definition limited to 720p.

The sRGB mode offers the most faithful rendering … if we can however speak of fidelity. Indeed, the average delta E – difference between the colors requested and the colors displayed – does not drop below 5.4. We are very far from delta E of 3 from which the human eye no longer perceives colorimetric drifts. The drift is therefore clearly visible here.

The gamma curve is not really comparable to that produced by home cinema projectors such as a BenQ W1090 or even an Optoma HD27. But in the market for picoprojectors, it is ultimately not that bad. The curve manages to maintain a certain stability over the entire spectrum. But the average is quite low (2) compared to the reference level (2.2). It is especially the very dark grays that suffer because they are overexposed.

The temperature curve is stable over the entire spectrum, but is placed on a too high average (8,080 K) compared to the reference temperature (6,500 K).

3D image quality

Despite the announced 3D compatibility (like all DLP 3D Link models), we did not manage to make 3D work via the HDMI input.

Functions and ergonomics

The Asus P3B measures 15.4 x 13.1 x 4.3 cm and weighs just 750 grams. The cover for the optics is supplied and maintained by a strap which prevents it from being lost and which encourages it to be replaced.

The Asus P3B offers access to all of its features without having to use the remote control. The top panel lets you choose the source, change the picture settings, open the media player, or adjust the sound. As is often the case, the quality of the 2-watt speaker is just enough to watch a TV program. For the rest, you must use an external system, be it a PC speaker kit or a home cinema

The integrated kickstand offers two tilt settings, which is very practical on a mobile projector intended to be used on the move. Another advantage of this model: the automatic keystone correction when the stand is used.

Placed at the back, the connection consists of an MHL-compatible HDMI input, a VGA input, a microSD card reader, a USB 2.0 port and a headphone output. the other USB port is used to recharge smartphones or tablets since, remember, the Asus P3B has a 12,000 mAh battery which gives it a measured autonomy of about an hour (slightly less when the media player is used).

The external power supply of the Asus P3B is compact and does not lead to the bulky dimensions of this video projector when traveling.

The Asus P3B has an in-house operating system that can read content from the internal memory (2 GB), a microSD card or a USB medium. The home screen provides access to the HDMI input, to Wi-Fi mirroring mode which works on iOS and Android via a dedicated application (QumiCast).

Consumption and noise

The Asus P3B projector uses 35 W in sRGB mode and 40 watts in Standard mode; the brightness then goes from 32 to 35 cd / m². The Asus P3B therefore consumes a lot for a picoprojecteur, but that remains little compared to the light power provided. Placed one meter behind the projector, we measured the noise at 39.3 dB (A) in sRGB mode and 40 dB (A) in Standard mode. The Asus P3B is noisy and cannot be forgotten, even in eco mode. The very sharp noise of his small fan is quite disturbing.

CONCLUSION

The Asus P3B is a good little picoprojector that is more aimed at professionals looking for a portable video projector for presentations on the go than home cinema enthusiasts . It may also be suitable for amateur players of very large sizes thanks to its excellent display delay. But beware of its very low contrast.
