Best TomTom GO 6200 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

The Tomtom GO series has two high-end GPS, the 5200 and 6200, both with a SIM card. But, uncommonly, a Wi-Fi connection that allows free map updates. Here is the test of the GO 6200 version …

Presentation

Evolution of the  GO 6000 , the GO 6200 still has a screen size of 6 inches (15.24 cm). An integrated SIM card allowing to receive alerts in real time. The little extra is therefore the Wi-Fi connection, which gives access to software updates, without forgetting the presence of Siri (Apple) and Google Assistant for sending SMS without hands leaving the wheel.

Ergonomics

The frame of the GO 6200 is no different from other models of the brand. We find the 12 command icons: “Search”, “Add home”, “Recent destination”, “Current routes”, “My destinations,” My routes “,” Save the route “,” Voice command “,” Parking ” , “Service station”, “Report a risk zone” and “Settings”. The latter gives access to multiple settings (colors and display, route planning, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, updates and new items, map type, sounds and alerts, choice of voice, voice commands, connection to MyDrive, languages and units of measure and system info).

It takes a little time to familiarize yourself with the device and choose your own settings. There are for example the choice between 7 display colors, different buttons and text sizes.

During our previous tests, we had a downside regarding the search for points of interest (POI) with the sole presence of service stations and parking lots. The GO 6200 always asks to go through the “Search” section to locate other POIs by genre or name of the place. In the end, nothing crippling given the speed with which research is carried out.

Equipment

As usual, TomTom gives us a shot of the big packaging which in reality contains very little: the GPS, its magnetic suction holder and its flexible head, the USB cord, the cigarette lighter tip and a mode d rather minimalist job.

In terms of dimensions, the GO 6200 is slightly smaller than its predecessors (162.9 x 105.60 x 18.60 mm compared to 169 x 105 x 20 mm. With its 262 grams, the TomTom GO 6200 acts as a featherweight against GO 6100 (304 g) and GO 6000 (292 g).

Once unpacked, the GO 6200 fits easily in one hand. Nothing to say about the manufacturing quality. The ignition button naturally falls under the index finger. A slot on the bottom edge can accommodate a microSD memory card (up to 32 GB) to support the 16 GB of internal memory.

The first micro-USB socket accessible on the back of the device is mainly used for charging (one hour of autonomy). As for the second grip, located on the articulated head, its access is not very obvious. It is best to make the connections via the USB cord. Its cigarette lighter tip before installing the TomTom on the windshield or on the dashboard.

The 6-inch WVGA touch screen (15.24 cm diagonal) offers a resolution of 800 x 480 px at a resolution of 154 ppi. As far as possible, avoid pinching the screen with your fingers to enlarge or reduce the map at the risk of seeing said screen smeared with fingerprints. Soft cloth of rigor. At night, the brightness may dazzle more than one, but it can be adjusted manually in the “Settings” menu. A setting automates the transition to night mode.

Route guidance

Wi-Fi is one of the major advantages of the GO 6200. It allows you to download the various software updates and other road maps without the need to connect it to a computer. As soon as the GO is switched on, a message announces the available updates.

TomTom also uses TomTom MyDrive (computer software and free mobile application to download) to plan a route in advance before transferring it to the GPS.

The Traffic Checker function – which appears in the form of a widget on the smartphone screen – informs the driver of the time and incidents which concern a regular journey, such as home-work.

The TomTom GO 6200 offers pre-loaded Europe maps (around fifty). To access and download maps from other countries, you must go to the MyDrive site. The danger zones cover 35 European countries, while road information is based on 29 countries. In France, regulations oblige, no exact position of fixed speed cameras but rather a large area. Moreover, during our test, a section radar at the entrance to the Saint-Cloud tunnel towards Paris and a site radar in the Fontainebleau forest were not signaled by the TomTom GO 6200.

Compose your itinerary

Before taking the road, it is necessary to calculate a route. As usual, TomTom leaves the choice as to how. The most classic is to type the address in one piece in the search bar via the virtual keyboard. A list of matching places appears. Just validate the correct address for the route to be calculated. Second option, use the voice command (developed by Nuance Communications) which equips many car manufacturers. To activate the voice command, just say the words “Hi TomTom”, which can be modified by a personalized expression. You have to articulate and speak loudly to be understood. Finally, the third option for choosing a destination, go first through MyDrive, as we said above.

Different options are taken into account for the calculation of routes (toll roads, ferries, carpool lanes, paths, fast, short, ecological, pedestrian, cycling routes …). Direction Normandy and more particularly Trouville. The 265 km journey is calculated in less than 20 seconds for an estimated journey time of 2 hours 50 minutes on a Friday evening.

On the right side of the map, a progress bar displays indications such as the next petrol stations, danger zones (works, fixed speed cameras), slowdowns, incidents and parking lots on arrival. On the way, the lane assist to ensure that we are on the right track. A voice announcement (Catherine, Jacques or Thomas) is heard 2 kilometers upstream of the exit to be taken, so as not to be taken aback. We also have fun with the difference (of the order of 100 to 200 meters). That it can have between an exit announced by TomTom and by Waze. The mobile app tends to shorten distances.

Additional functions

The Bluetooth connection allows you to pair a smartphone with the GO 6200, which is also compatible with the voice assistants Siri (Apple) and Google Now (Android). The GPS therefore acts as a hands-free kit during an incoming call. Communication is rather audible, provided the volume of the car radio is lowered.

Text messages can be read by voice after agreement from the driver. To respond, simply trigger Siri or Google Now by clicking on the handset symbol located in the right corner of the GPS screen.

CONCLUSION

With its integrated SIM card and its Wi-Fi connection, this TomTom GO 6200 is undeniably well supplied. Remains that at 380 €, it is a purchase that requires reflection, especially since the little brother GO 5200 is sold 330 € with the same services; only the screen size differs.
