Ergonomics
Black, Sennheiser can do. Shiny, moire, granulated, tinted, iridescent, ribbed, metallic. The brand scrolls through the sober designs, which follow one another but are not alike. What is certain is that the PXC 550 is not similar to its predecessor, the PXC 450, and even less so to Momentum Wireless
The surprising oval shape of the ear cups allows them to embrace the pavilions very pleasantly, while the thick memory foam pads covered with imitation leather combined with the headband lined with the same materials offer excellent comfort. The PXC 550, which can be adapted to large and small cranial sizes, can therefore be worn for hours without causing discomfort.
The touch controls are located on the right atrium: a tap puts the music in play / pause and allows call management (off-hook / on-hook), a swipe back and forth allows you to return to the start of the track or to the previous one, from back to front, to the next track, from bottom to top and vice versa, to adjust the listening volume. The PXC 550 follows this great trend of headsets which can “open” on the outside thanks to the microphones used for the ANC : two taps allow you to listen to what is happening outside the helmet.
Audio
There are many things to measure on this PXC! In addition to the usual acoustic performance (frequency response, harmonic distortion rate, response to square signals, in analog and Bluetooth), we need to study the effect of the effects and the two noise reduction levels on the sound as well as the mitigation offered by these
Let’s start with the general sound rendering of the PXC 550. Certainly more focused on the first half of the audible spectrum, it puts the bass and low-mids in the spotlight. However, the behavior of the membranes being healthy, said basses are clean and dynamic, well recorded on the playing field assigned to them. The double basses and cellos are particularly well transcribed, slightly more on the front of the stage than usual, brilliant in their timbre with contours nicely cut out by the PXC 550.
Certainly not deaf for all that, we can qualify the sound of the PXC 550 warm. Particularly suitable for Massive Attack, Zero 7 or How To Destroy Angels songs. The active noise reduction has a good surprise in terms of sound rendering, do not
The spatialization, faithful to the Sennheiser spirit, is absolutely excellent. Channel separation is very well mastered, as is the transcription of the different frequency ranges. You can clearly locate each instrument and the stage width is superb – for a closed helmet. But where the rub is, it’s on the side of harmonic distortion: extremely wise throughout the spectrum, it suddenly gets carried away between 1 and 2 kHz. 1.5% is certainly not gigantic, but it is enough to make certain voices, guitars, trumpets or cymbals aggressive. Note however that the eardrum is never disturbed by any sibilance.
CONCLUSION
The PXC 550 is an extremely complete helmet, offering a myriad of features. Very comfortable, it delivers a sound that is both warm and precise, as well as an incredibly low latency. However, the sound quality in Bluetooth is slightly lower, and the noise reduction significantly lower than that offered by the likes of the genre.
