Ergonomics

To find out all the details and experience of using B&O Play Beoplay H9, we recommend that you read the  Beoplay H7 test . In fact, the helmets are extremely similar, whether in terms of manufacturing, controls or connection possibilities.

The arrival of active noise reduction, however, upsets the ergonomic score. Indeed, even if it keeps its promises, the Beoplay H9 is clearly not the best student we have had in our labs. With active noise reduction and wireless connection, it offers a usage time of around 14 hours. If you plan a longer trip and want to enjoy the RBA for a longer time, it is possible to push the autonomy of the headset to 21h, but this time wired.

A small beep always warns before the battery is completely exhausted, around 45 min before stopping – variable duration depending on your listening volume. It is much less than its direct competitors such as the QC35, the Sony MDR-1000X or the Backbeat Pro 1 or 2. If the H7 just got the 5th star, the H9 remains glued to 4 stars in this section.

Audio

If the aesthetics of the Beoplay H7 and H9 are almost identical, the same cannot be said of their sound performance, and it’s not really for the better

First, let’s talk about passive use. The bass is warm without being particularly well defined or ultra-precise, especially on attacks. The Demon’s Name is Surveillance of Meshuggah put the membranes to the test, quickly overtaken by the frantic rhythm of the bass drum and the bass, which ends up making this area snore a little. Even outside this context, the voices do not stand out particularly well and they are sometimes masked.

The reproduction of the treble is not as rough as the measurement might suggest, but the latter would still have benefited from being more ample. The metallic side of the cymbals is exacerbated. The soundstage is still quite wide and remains legible.

The start of the active mode – that is to say headphones on but without activating the noise reduction – makes us switch to a much less pleasant universe, particularly with regard to the rendering in the bass: without RBA (reduction active noise), the membranes are much more unstable, the precision in this area drops sharply and the masking effects are legion. This large overweight phagocytoses the medium and also makes listening more tiring in the long term. In the end, the scene loses readability and width.

CONCLUSION

The B&O Play Beoplay H9 is the epitome of frustration. This model retains the ergonomic qualities of its predecessor, but completely forgets its origins when it comes to the essential point of sound. It is all the more regrettable that the active noise reduction is effective. If you fall in love with its look and you absolutely want active noise reduction, head for the Beoplay H8 . In all other cases, many other helmets will satisfy you.
