Undeniable, the line of Sennheiser hi-fi headphones continues with the HD 599, a big replacement for the HD 598 in place since 2010. As usual, the German manufacturer keeps the same recipe while making some slight adjustments. Let’s see how this cuvée is doing.

Ergonomics

The HD 599 takes up the strong points which made the success of the range, namely the lightness and the comfort. Its design is clearly not the neatest and most noble that can be encountered in hi-fi headphones, especially because of its plastic chassis and its many visible assembly marks, but it allows get an extremely light and also very comfortable helmet. Once placed on the head, we quickly forget its existence and it is the most important.

Whatever the listening time, the HD 599 always fulfills its mission. The velvet ear cushions and the imitation leather of the headband offer a very soft rest on the head and the pressure points are very well distributed. These headphones are suitable for a very wide variety of morphology thanks to the horizontal and vertical pivot of the ear cups.

The atypical design of the earbuds may surprise more than one, but we end up adopting it very quickly after a few sessions. The roll bar offers a significant deployment. The helmet is suitable for head sizes from approximately 35 to 45 cm (measured from the center of the pavilion of the right ear to the left, passing through the top of the head). Larger heads can therefore wear the helmet without any problem, but it may be a little bit just for the smallest.

The Sennheiser HD 599 is supplied with two detachable cables which connect to the headphones via a 3.5 mm mini-jack port. This port has a small security mechanism that locks the cable when connected. The cables supplied benefit from an honest construction, but we would still have appreciated the presence of a command on the 1.2 m cable.

Audio

The Sennheiser HD 599 is an open over-ear headset that features 38 mm transducers.

These headphones are not the most surgical there is, but they offer a nice sound rendering with a slightly marked coloration in the bass and a very nice linearity in the rest of the spectrum. There is very little to complain about on this last point. The voices are intelligible, well detailed and the sibilance is simply absent. Like the mids, the highs express themselves in a very natural and fairly detailed way, without exaggeration. A micro boost in the treble extremes would not have been too much, but it is far from being problematic. We benefit from a good transcription of the sound scene, from a sympathetic outsourcing of listening, to benefit in the end from a good sound immersion. Furthermore, without much harm.

There is however a criticism that can be made in the low register. The highlighting of this area gives the whole a warmer trend and this still lacks a little readability, fluidity. Also expect to hear many favored musical sources, such as bass / double bass, large percussion (bass drum, toms …), cellos or even male voices. If you prefer neutral and ultra-detailed bass, the HD 599 is not the first headset to think about.

There are few comments to be made on the distortion. This is particularly low, even at very high listening volume. The HD 599 is a hi-fi headset that remains relatively sensitive and easy to power. Indeed, it requires 174 mV to reach 94 dB. 

CONCLUSION

The Sennheiser HD 599 can be an interesting choice if you want to chew your teeth before seriously investing in a high-performance headset. Even if the bass remains a little too colorful, these open headphones offer remarkable linearity over a very large part of the spectrum and a beautiful sound immersion. With an introductory price of € 249, it however faces many more affordable and sometimes more efficient competitors.
