Sennheiser is not one to change its formula radically over the years and it is not the PC 373D that will change things. These over-ear headphones retain the design, shape and design of the PC 363D, with just a few minor cosmetic adjustments.
The manufacturer has chosen to favor lightness, flexibility and comfort at the cost of a plastic design that is not necessarily ultra-solid. It is successful and the quality of the finishes is correct, but we can still see some traces of assembly.
Comfort is really there. The PC 373D takes advantage of very soft, thick and wide “velvet” effect pads, both on the headband and on the ear cups. The helmet comes to rest naturally on the head, with well distributed pressure points, without clamping effect or problem with the pavilions (contact with the grilles, lack of space for the pavilion…). Note also that the ear cushions can be detached and replaced, as on the PC 363D, PC 360 and G4me One
The notched arch without markers deploys and stores easily. It is suitable for both large and small heads (31 to 45 cm measured from ear to ear via the top of the head). The open design obviously offers more ventilation and contributes to this beautiful feeling of natural wearing; you would almost forget it, even during long listening sessions.
On the connection, the PC 373D divides. The only positive points are the detachable cable and its length of 3 meters. For the rest, we deplore the blatant lack of versatility. This model only connects to USB on PC. We would have preferred the same formula as the previous version, namely a double mini-jack then USB output, choice via the dongle .
The software supplied with the headset is very simple. The interface is very condensed and the possibilities for customization are reduced to a minimum. It is only possible to choose between 3 predefined equalizations, activate the microphone noise reduction and choose between 4 levels of microphone feedback in the headphones (low, medium, high or none). This has the merit of being effective, but we would have preferred more customization possibilities and sound functionalities for the headset and the microphone.
The Sennheiser PC 373D also does not differ from its predecessors in terms of sound performance. It symbolizes the manufacturer’s philosophy of keeping the sound vision of its traditional headphones, and it does it well.
We therefore find a balanced, natural sound reproduction, which remains precise without being surgical. If you like deep and dominant bass, you won’t find it here. Failing to go down well in the bass, the PC 373D offers relatively fair bass which naturally find their place and which does not cause any masking effect. Rest assured, the bass is present enough to support the scene and offer warmth. The medium register is a little more privileged and especially a more precise hair.
We take advantage of a beautiful feeling of scenic presence, always without overbidding and therefore without aggressiveness or nasal rendering. The voices are perfectly intelligible, even when the contents are rich in frequencies. The restitution in the treble remains in the same vein, without excess, with a little added presence to give a little more clarity and shine. The good response in the higher frequencies also allows to keep a nice feeling of air and definition in the discrete effects of reverberation, echo and in room effects in general.
The way in which the sound scene is reproduced has particularly marked us. We are certainly in front of an open headset, therefore more airy than a closed headset, but the PC 373D does not deliver a real width and a real sound depth. Each element stands out without difficulty and is placed naturally in space. Immersion is guaranteed and you can always appreciate the sound scene when listening to content very rich in sources or frequencies.
The PC 373D takes advantage of the famous and imposing gooseneck microphone used for a long time by Sennheiser. It activates and cuts automatically via a small notch at the bottom and top of the stroke. Its small, slightly flexible part allows it to be placed quickly and naturally in front of the mouth.
Difficult to fault something with this microphone which is certainly one of the best on the market. It offers an excellent quality of capture, the voice is captured in a clear and clean way; there is no problem with whistling and plosives. The Noise Reduction does its small job to clean the transmitted signal perfectly, but it is not completely essential, because the microphone is already particularly directional and it cuts out very well the surrounding noises. Add that, even if the microphone level is not adjustable on the fly, it allows both to be heard if you do not speak particularly loud and it has a little room for maneuver so as not to saturate instantly if you suddenly speak louder.
This PC 373D is positioned as a safe bet by favoring both comfort, quality of sound rendering and microphone pickup. On the other hand, the connection really cringes, especially since the rendering of Dolby Surround is still not interesting. In the end, the option is expensive paid and we would really have preferred a simple stereo version with double mini-jack or at least with the choice of connector offered by the PC 363D.
