Best Sonos Sub Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

It was the big absent from the Sonos range: the subwoofer. The built-in speakers are good but with bass is better! Here is the Sub test, intended to complete the Play range.

Ergonomics

Most of the time, the subwoofers are cubic in shape. Suddenly, they are not very high but have quite a hold on the ground. Not very practical in a small apartment. Sonos sought and found an interesting solution from a technical point of view (but not only): two speakers facing each other.

Suddenly the Sub is limited to two 10-inch speakers rather than a large speaker 15 “or more; which allows it to limit its thickness. Another advantage, the two speakers are in perfect opposition to phase, from a mechanical point of view. Suddenly, the vibrations of the box are almost nonexistent. You could almost put your cup of tea or coffee on it – don’t try, all the same.

The set is extremely well finished, covered with an excellent quality piano black lacquer. The junctions are very clean too. Sonos has often been criticized for the lack of controls on its speakers, but let’s be realistic here: it wouldn’t really make sense. The Sub is obviously not an autonomous enclosure. A negative point all the same: a pity that the manufacturer has not placed an input / output. It would not have cost much and it would have made it possible to add a point to connect a headset or a smartphone.

Audio

After installation and simple adjustments, even simpler than with the other products in the range (in fact, the selection of the pairing with Play: * and the level of the subwoofer), the Sub is ready for employment.

The Sub is not necessarily capable of delivering deep infra-bass, far from it. His HP is missing a few inches for this. On the other hand, the interfacing of the two speakers is very well done and no phase problem appears. As for the power, there is something to spare, too much. In addition to a pair of Play: 3, it is difficult to find a fair compromise of level allowing it to be present without masking the speakers.

In fact, the Sub has a defect: it drags. That is to say that the attacks are reactive but that its speakers tend to float too much after the attack, and that can be heard. The slightest impact suddenly takes on a significant scale beyond the pure sound volume and its dynamics. It is not dramatic and the behavior is generally quite healthy. But you need powerful speakers to balance the rendering and Play: 3 show their limits. Using Play: 5 is much more reasonable.

If we except this “slight” sound incompatibility – your neighbors may be incompatible, too – the Sub is a beautiful product in every sense of the term: technological, sound quality, aesthetics. It is a well-found complement to the manufacturer’s autonomous speakers, along the same lines. There remains one point that will hinder many users: the price. More than 600 € for a “simple” subwoofer, it’s painful all the same.

STRONG POINTS

  • Design, finishes.
  • Wireless.
  • Power.

WEAK POINTS

  • Low dragging.
  • Its sometimes too massive.
  • No integrated connectors.

CONCLUSION

Break your piggy bank, the Sub arrives and it is very expensive! But that is (maybe) the price to pay for a complete Sonos installation …
