Best Panasonic Lumix TZ100 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

Panasonic does not ultimately offer so much a 1 “type sensor digital camera as that: apart from the Lumix FZ1000 bridge (summer 2014) and the Lumix CM1 smartphone (autumn 2014), there is room for a compact expert. But Osaka has decided to look further by integrating, for the first time, a 1 “type sensor in a compact traveler of the TZ series.

The most impressive is not the 10x 25-250 mm zoom, the electronic viewfinder, the touch screen, the 4K video, no: the most impressive is that the Lumix TZ100 concentrates all of this in a barely more case. big than the very first Lumix TZ10 of 2006. So, new photographic milestone or technological gadget with clay feet?

Presentation

The Panasonic Lumix TZ100 can boast a technical sheet that would make many bridges, hybrids and even reflexes look jealous: BSI CMOS sensor type 1 “20.1 Mpx, 25-250 mm f / 2.8-5 zoom , 9, 4K video, touch screen, Wi-Fi, etc. You would be wrong to think that it is “only” a compact.

Reactivity

Panasonic makes fast boxes: its DFD technology is one of the most efficient on the market. The Lumix TZ100 is equipped with DFD technology, the Lumix TZ100 is a Panasonic, so the Lumix TZ100 is fast. No need to epilogate, even if, it is true, for a compact with 10x zoom, the boot time could be a bit shorter (a Lumix TZ80 does better despite its 30x zoom) and the wait between two shots (JPEG or RAW) is not the best on the market. The fact remains that the Lumix TZ100, which is theoretically “only” a travel compact, easily manages to compete with very good expert compact sensors type 1 “, such as the Canon PowerShot G5 X or the Sony RX100 IV which, them, are not encumbered by a 10x zoom.

Image quality

So we come to the interesting part of this test: what does the Lumix TZ100’s largest sensor actually do? Is it just a marketing effect, or is the gain in quality noticeable? Recall the theoretical benefits of a large sensor: better rise in sensitivity, better modeling of the image, shallower depth of field with equal aperture and focal length (to better separate your subject from the background). The main drawback being that the larger the sensor, the more complicated it becomes to develop a high amplitude zoom without sacrificing compactness.

This is why the Lumix TZ100 must be content with a 25-250mm f / 2.8-5.9. This may not seem like much, but you have to keep in mind that in this size, all the other manufacturers offer zooms of “only” 4.2x (at Canon) and that, to exceed 10x on 1 “sensor, you must move towards much more imposing bridges.

Let’s break the suspense right away: the Panasonic Lumix TZ100 is not, by its image quality, the best digital camera with 1 “sensor. But that’s not what we ask. However, the Panasonic Lumix TZ100 offers, by far, the best image quality among travel compacts, and that’s where it’s expected.

Evaluating the increase in sensitivity of the TZ100 forces us to play the tightrope walkers. If we compare it to the expert compacts from Canon and Sony, we have to admit that the little Panasonic is not quite up to par. Indeed, where for example a Canon Powerhot G9 X  remains rather neutral, from a colorimetric point of view, when the sensitivity increases, the Lumix TZ100 tends very clearly towards magenta

Video

Like the reactivity part, the video part of the Lumix TZ100 will go very quickly: like any good Panasonic, the TZ100 films everything, films well, and does it easily. You will therefore be entitled to Full HD in 50 / 25p at 28 Mb / s and 4K UHD (3 840 x 2 160 px) of 25 / 24p 100 Mb / s. In this definition, keep in mind that ” a crop of approximately 1.3x will be applied.

The maximum wide-angle, in 4K UHD video, will therefore correspond roughly to a 32 mm, against 25 mm in Full HD and in photo. Of course, the various 4K Photo functions are available, as well as the Post Focus mode which here, unlike the Lumix TZ80, makes sense, since the Type 1 “sensor allows a better separation of the shots. Finally, the AF is precise and flexible , the sound is good and the stabilization works wonderfully. That is the demand of the people ? A headphone jack and a microphone jack? Certainly. But is it really useful on this type of case?
