Best Panasonic Lumix GX9 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

The Panasonic Lumix GX9 takes the compact size of the GX80 by associating it with the base of the GX8 . It therefore incorporates the same BSI CMOS 4/3 “20.3 Mpx sensor coupled to the optimized Venus Engine processor, offers expert handling thanks to the presence of a new viewfinder and a new tilting screen, and is equipped of the brand’s latest technological advances, an alluring case that demonstrates all of Panasonic’s know-how and intends to rally the experts to the cause of hybrids.

Presentation

The success of the Lumix GX80 – n ° 1 in hybrid sales of the brand in 2017 and a real masterpiece from Panasonic thanks to its excellent quality / price ratio – has comforted the manufacturer who reiterates his strategy on a more expert device: the Panasonic Lumix GX9. This camera is announced at € 799 naked, € 100 more than the launch price of the Canon EOS M50 hybrid (with APS-C sensor but without 5-axis stabilization), and € 400 less than that of its predecessor the GX8 (€ 1,199 naked). The GX9 is therefore positioned at an extremely aggressive price for an attractive technical sheet.

Reactivity

The Panasonic Lumix GX9 integrates the Venus Engine processor already crossed on the GX8, G9 and GH5 and optimized, as well as the DFD technology developed for the  GH4 and which we know well. A new algorithm has been developed for this version in order to improve AF tracking, especially when the subject leaves the frame or an obstacle disturbs the focusing. The times are slightly below those of the GX8. But they were not made with the same lens (here the G Vario 12-60 mm f / 3.5-5.6), which explains in particular a slower start. The other results are very close and still just as exciting. Panasonic indeed announced a burst up to 9 frames per second (i / s) in AF-S and 6 i / s in AF-C. We managed to reach 8.94 fps in JPG and 9.29 fps in RAW + JPG. The promise is therefore largely kept.

Image quality

With this Venus Engine processor, the Panasonic Lumix GX9 therefore combines the Type 4/3 “Live CMOS sensor of 20.3 Mpx of the GX8, G9 and GH5. The increase in sensitivity is still as well managed, homogeneous and progressive; the device can climb easily up to ISO 3,200 and push up to ISO 6,400 or even ISO 12,800 smoothly. Even if electronic noise gradually begins to disturb the accuracy of images. Everything is better controlled than on the Sony Alpha 6500 , for example, which displays a coarser electronic noise. Also in terms of colorimetry, the images generated are faithful to reality and less bland than those produced by the Fujifilm X-T20

The sensor / processor couple is completed by a 5-axis stabilization and a silent electromagnetic shutter capable of reaching 1 / 16,000 s in electronic shutter. With this shock quartet, it is easy to photograph in many situations. Especially in low light conditions thanks to flexible exposure reports. Panasonic could have gone a little further and we could have expected an ultra high definition mode, as proposed for example by the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II which combines several images to generate a file at 40 Mpx. We tested the GX9 with the G Vario 12-60 mm f / 3.5-5.6 kit lens which will be suitable for beginners. But with a brighter and more precise lens, you will benefit even more from the performance of the sensor.

Finally, like Fujifilm whose devices take advantage of many modes simulating old films, Panasonic emphasizes its new modes “L. Monochrome” and “L. Monochrome D” (for a more dynamic rendering of tones with deeper blacks). It is a way for the manufacturer to give itself a stronger identity, or at least to try it.

Video

The Panasonic Lumix GX9 takes the video mode of the GX80: Full HD video (1,920 x 1,080 px) 50p at 28 Mbit / s, 4K UHD video (3,840 x 2,160 px) 25 and 30p at 100 Mbit / s (with cropping x1.2), offering effective stabilization, good sound capture and pleasant image rendering. Missing the headphone and microphone jacks, which would have allowed the GX9 to distinguish itself a little more from the GX80, or even Full HD recording at 120 fps for the production of slow motion.

To take full advantage of the 4K UHD definition, there is the possibility of extracting an image directly from the recording. There is also the “4K Live” cropping mode capable of automatically generating a side track, from bottom to top or even diagonally: an effective and very significant function for further use. This mode is only available for manual recording.
