Best Panasonic Lumix G7 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:
Used to renewing its Lumix G every year, or even a little less, Panasonic calmed down a bit and took the time to breathe and think before replacing the good (but trivial) Lumix G6 with a G7. Great good took him: taking over many attributes of the big brother GH4, darling of many videographers. The Lumix G7 pulls up a line G which began to run out of steam and lose interest. Lumix G is dead, long life to Lumix G7, 4K video, Oled viewfinders and touch screens. But besides, what is there in this Lumix G7?
Presentation
With the Lumix G7, Panasonic completes the complete renewal of its hybrid offer initiated two years ago by the Lumix GX7 , whose G7 also uses the 16 MP CMOS sensor. Resulting from the general upgrading of the Lumix, this G7 thus combines multiple aesthetic and technical elements developed and introduced in its “cousins” over the past two years: angular design of the Lumix FZ1000 , viewfinder, screen and autofocus of the GH4 , video know-how 4K of GH4 (again). He adds a new Venus Engine processor and new image processing algorithms.

Reactivity
At Panasonic, responsiveness is a matter taken very seriously and it must be recognized that the manufacturer of Osaka is one of the only ones who, when he promises an AF of a relaxing speed, keeps his word. The Panasonic Lumix G7 thus does honor to the family tradition (Honor and Family, it seems that it is important in Japan), well helped by a little help from the big brother GH4 (again him), who lends him his DFD technology – Depth From Defocus . So everything goes quickly, very very quickly, from the development to the sequence of photos. We will have to thank the memory location compatible with UHS-II cards.
What about gusts? The graph below speaks for itself: the maximum of 8 images per second is very slightly exceeded in JPG and grazed in RAW + JPG. All this is very nice, especially since in JPG the recording is done until saturation of the memory card. In RAW + JPG, however, life is less rosy since the burst stops after 18 images in cadence L, at 15 images in cadence M and at 10 images in cadence H.
All things considered, this is still very impressive, all the more so since we are talking about a consumer camera and not a semi-professional camera intended for sports photography enthusiasts. By the way, note that there is a “Rafale HS” position, which only involves the electronic shutter – until then, the mechanical shutter was used – which turned out to be so fast that we couldn’t measure its actual speed. Extremely rare and a little annoying case for the testers that we are, it must be recognized.
Image quality
For many years, Panasonic has trusted the definition of 16 MP for the sensors of its hybrids, which on paper can give like a feeling of immobility. It would be a serious, very serious error, as the images that the Lumix. G7 delivers are different from those of the Lumix G6.. As often, it is the joint work of the sensor + processor + algorithms trinity which contributes to this progress. The sensor is not brand new, since it is the one introduced in 2013 with the GX7. The algorithms are from GH4.
The processor, on the other hand, is a brand new Venus Engine – they are all called “Venus Engine”. But it is difficult to really know what is changing from an electronic point of view. The fact remains that this Panasonic Lumix G7 delivers overall finer, more detailed images, in a word, more precise and with better controlled colorimetry. All while gaining sensitivity, since it will no longer be afraid to use it at ISO 3200, in direct JPG output.
Although its sensor comes from the GX7, the Lumix G7 does not inherit the mechanical stabilization of the said sensor. It will therefore be necessary to trust the optical stabilization of the various zooms provided in the kits, or of the multiple objectives in Micro 4/3 mount.
Video
“4K”! Well, okay, technically, it’s UHD in 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and not real “4K Cine”, while a Samsung NX500 , for example, can film in both formats – and without applying a crop, as is the case with the Panasonic, where the maximum wide angle is slightly cropped. But do not sulk our pleasure, especially since with the Lumix G7. You are entitled to UHD at 100 Mb / s, in 30p, 25p or 24p, all in MP4.
Of course, you can shoot in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) in 60p, 50p, 60i, 50i, 25p and 24p, both in AVCHD and in MP4. And, of course, Panasonic requires, you have a manual video mode, with PASM modes, to control your apertures, speeds, sensitivities in real time, with focus peaking, zebras, adjustment of the sensitivity of the built-in microphone (very good by the way) and possibility of creating a curve for managing personalized lights, like on the big brother GH4.
Apart from a headphone jack, this little Panasonic Lumix G7 lacks nothing in video: the images it delivers are beautiful, the sound is clean, the autofocus both precise and progressive. The AF mode “face detection” is formidable of effectiveness and you will take an immense pleasure to handle the orientable screen and to use the touch to change your zone of focusing.
