Best Optoma PK201 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020

Mid-range among Optoma pico-projectors, the PK201 is positioned under the PK301 . The manufacturer highlights two strengths of this model: sharing and portability. This, with two key arguments: 160 grams and a diagonal projection of 1m70.

FUNCTION

The PK201, in addition to being very compact (significantly more than the 3M MP180), is silent (measured at 21 dB) and has a variety of connectors directly on the device (mini HDMI) or via a series of adapters provided ( VGA and composite) or optional (Nokia cable and iPod / Iphone). It can be controlled remotely thanks to an optional remote control at 58 €.

First weak point of this projector, its autonomy does not exceed 45 minutes at full power (it consumes 8W in this mode and its battery is 5.26 Wh). Another weak point, its small internal memory of 56 MB makes the acquisition of a micro SD card compulsory … unless using only external sources. Finally, the speaker is weak and quickly saturates.

DISPLAY

Before analyzing in detail the results of this PK201, we compared its images to those of the 3M MP180 . The 3M displays a significantly larger image at equal distance and theoretical measures that could make it gain (better gamma and gamut). However, comparing the images side by side gives the winning Optoma thanks to deeper blacks and a better impression of contrast and color fidelity.

Compare it with other projectors in our face-to-face .

As with its big brother (PK301), the black level of the PK201 is better when the projector displays a small black area rather than a completely black image. Attention, do not compare the above figure with “classic” projectors. The overall brightness level is incomparably lower, which logically pulls the black level down.

In terms of colors, the PK201 plays the dynamic card with bright colors and an extended gamut. This tends to distort the colors. The DeltaE gap therefore reaches new heights. On the other hand, the gray scale (gamma) progresses far too quickly, which results in darker shades lighter than they should be. However, this does not prevent the image from being pleasant to the untrained eye.

In the dark, we preferred not to move this projector more than 2 meters from the screen to maintain good brightness. The image obtained thus corresponds roughly to that of a 55-inch television . In a lighted room, the distance must be greatly reduced to focus the projection area on a small area.

Rainbow effects specific to DLP technology – and monoLCoS – are visible but they are very reduced. We have been able to perceive it in black and white films, when the images are very contrasted. With color images, their presence becomes negligible.

What about the Pros?

On this point, we rather give our preference to the superior model, the PK301, or even to the competition, with the 3M MP180. This is in order to display larger images with less perspective and gain better autonomy (especially at 3M).

CONCLUSION

For occasional recreational use, the PK201 allows you, in the dark, to have a correct image of the size of a 55 inch TV. In a bright room, the projection area must be greatly reduced to ensure a minimum of contrast. To gain settings and a slightly larger projection area, you have to go upmarket on the PK301 from the same manufacturer.
