Image quality
Photo & video
The Panasonic Lumix GX9 is equipped with a 4/3 ”20.3 MP sensor which already sits in some models like the GH5 or the G9 – the high end, therefore. It does not have a low-pass filter, which improves micro-contrast. The novelty is a data processing chip which responds to the sweet name of Venus Engine at Panasonic, associated with updated algorithms. Panasonic engineers announce better color rendering and wider dynamics.
With a definition of 20.3 MP, the photodiodes of the GX9 sensor are approximately 3.3 µm. The sensitivity range extends from ISO 200 to 12,800 by default and can be increased from ISO 100 to 25,600. Now let’s look at the JPEG files out of the box.
JPEG
Conventionally, the images produced between ISO 100 and 800 are of excellent quality with a lot of details, a practically imperceptible granulation and dense and well saturated colors. At 1,600 and 3,200 ISO, noise is particularly well managed with a fine grain, little color and good preservation of details at 1,600 ISO. At ISO 3200, the smoothing is more marked and the finest details are erased. A first qualitative leap is therefore reached with this sensitivity. For higher sensitivities, smoothing is more and more present with, in return, a very soft granulation and few colored pixels. It will be possible to venture to ISO 6,400, the 20 MP allowing to “shoot” a little on the shots, but we reach the limits of the system, the higher sensitivities being largely degraded.
Equivalent comparison
Is the Panasonic Lumix GX9 doing better than its little comrades? This is what we suggest you observe by comparing several boxes with images compared to an equivalent of 60 x 40 cm in 180 dpi.
We start by comparing the images of the GX9 with those of one of its elders, the GX800 presented at the start of the 2017 school year. The renderings are finally quite close with, however, more beautiful nuances with the younger, more details and a less aggressive smoothing. The gain compared to the old generation is subtle, but very real.
We continue with the Sony A6500 with a 24MP APS-C sensor. The Sony model delivers a slightly higher image quality, but the GX9 really does not have to be ashamed of its performance, quite the contrary.
We also chose to compare the GX9 to the latest high-end model from Fujifilm. The X-H1 which is the best in electronic noise processing on an APS-C sensor. Again, the GX9 is overtaken by the Fujifilm model, but the performance is far from ridiculous.
Oscilloscope
We also took a few images at different sensitivities under the eye of an oscilloscope to highlight the rise and processing of electronic noise. This confirms our visual impression with little visible noise in shots up to ISO 6,400 where the oscilloscope variations are more visible, especially in dark values
Video
Panasonic forces, video features are not forgotten, on the contrary. And if the Panasonic Lumix GX9 naturally does not offer the same functionality as a GH5s , it is nonetheless a good camcorder which offers the possibility of filming in UHD at 30/25 fps. The quality of the videos is at the rendezvous with good image accuracy. The GX9 delivers a quality equivalent to that of the G9. However, it remains slightly behind compared to APS-C boxes like the Fujifilm X-H1 or the Sony A6500 .
When switching to HDTV 1,080 video mode, there is no cropping and the full width of the sensor is used. Notwithstanding, the transition to UHD mode unfortunately causes cropping
Autofocus
In the studio, the GX9 behaved well with a fast and precise focusing and good tracking of the subject with in particular the face detection function. However, in the field (see video file of the concert for download), we noted some unpleasant pumping effects to say the least. Remember that in concert, the light conditions are difficult …
