The Krups Expresso shredder Evidence is the manufacturer’s first automatic machine with connected shredder. Many other manufacturers have already successfully tried this technology, in particular Delonghi with the PrimaDonna Elite ECAM650.75.MS . Will the newcomer forget this illustrious reference?

The manufacturer tells us that it is possible to start preparing the drink remotely using the “Krups Espresso” application. The test has been modified accordingly.

Launched at € 900, the Krups Evidence represents the flagship of the manufacturer’s range of automatic coffee makers with grinder. It also has all the assets to seduce lovers of espresso, cappuccino, Americano and other  latte macchiato  : a control panel with screen, a pressure of 15 bars, an XXL water tank (2,3 l), a set of 15 prerecorded recipes … On paper, the obvious is obvious: it has everything to please. In fact, the obvious is obvious: this is not always enough …

Ease of use

It takes space on the worktop to accommodate the Krups Evidence coffee maker. If it is a little lower than the Delonghi PrimaDonna Elite ECAM650.75.MS (36 cm against 48), it displays a width (24 cm) and a depth (35 cm) very similar. It weighs 8.4 kg when empty, which allows it to be placed on a solidly fixed shelf.

Krups plays the card of sobriety and adopts a frontage in brushed stainless steel of the most beautiful effect, surmounted by an inclined control panel (practical for readability) composed of a digital display and sensitive keys. However, this part catches the fingerprints with disconcerting speed and the Krups Evidence loses its splendor in less time than it takes to ask ” Sugar? “.

For a machine of this standing, we would have appreciated that the spout was made of metal. Weary, it is made of shiny metal imitation plastic. And as it is not motorized, it also finds itself studded with fingerprints in just a few manipulations. Note that the maximum distance between the spout and the cup rest is 18 cm, which allows the use of a good size mug.

The Krups Evidence grounds container is located on the left side of the machine: it can be removed and replaced without any difficulty. The large 2.3 l water tank is located at the rear; despite its imposing volume, extraction is easy thanks to the ingenious retractable handle. It is a little more complicated to replace it, but with a little practice the operation is done well. The cup holder is removed from its location by pulling it towards you; good point, it is sufficiently well designed to prevent untimely leaks.

Connectivity

The Evidence connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone or tablet equipped with the Krups Espresso application, available on iOS and Android. Pairing presents no difficulty, even if the creation of an account is necessary.

Unsurprisingly, the application mainly allows to deport the control panel to a terminal. You have access to the same possibilities as on the machine and this time, you have the right to choose the quantity of drink before starting up. The settings can be saved in the “My favorites” tab for future use. Please note: you can only change the volume of a basic preparation. Impossible to choose the temperature or the power of the aroma, contrary to what the application linked to the Delonghi PrimaDonna Elite offers. After these few adjustments, you can start preparing the drink remotely, taking care to have previously placed a cup under the dispensing nozzles.

The Krups Espresso application also offers a mini maintenance booklet which indicates, for example, the number of coffees remaining before cleaning the circuit. Good point, the user receives a notification when it is time to perform a maintenance operation, such as descaling or changing the water filter. Obviously, it is possible to consult the manual in digital version.

Finally, aficionados of the little black will appreciate the presence of a “Coffee Notebook”: they can thus keep track of a vintage that they particularly liked, by even assigning it notes: bitterness, acidity, intensity … It is also possible to enter a date of purchase, a price, the name of the brand where it was purchased.

Easy maintenance

The various removable parts of the Krups Evidence are easy to extract and replace. It is therefore easy to empty the grounds container or the drip tray before replacing them. The replacement of the filtering part of the tank is also done without difficulty.

Certain maintenance operations are automated and can start when the coffee maker is started or turned off, such as cleaning the coffee dispensing nozzles – provided that you have activated it through the machine settings. In our opinion, it would have been preferable for this cleaning to be started automatically, because the hurried user who does not take the time to read the notice risks missing out. Krups has also planned a cleaning of the milk jug and its components, including the famous flexible hose. We regret not being able to remove the extractor for extensive maintenance, while less sophisticated machines, such as the Scott Slimissimo , allow this.

Speed

Krups Evidence is one of the fast coffee makers in our comparison: you have to wait 73 s to taste the first espresso of the day (40 ml). This period includes preheating the machine, rinsing the nozzles, grinding the beans and extracting the coffee. It takes 38 s more to run a second espresso in stride. Admittedly, we are still far from the speed record held by the Jura Ena Micro 1 (22 s). But Krups has made some progress here, since its Full Auto Espresso  requires a minute more for the same exercise.

Remember also that, as mentioned above, when you interrupt a program in progress, the device takes 56 s to become functional again. Suffice to say an eternity! The less patient people will appreciate, of course …

Power consumption

One would think that the Evidence does not consume anything when it is in standby, in “off” mode (that is to say under power, but screen off). This is not the case: the consumption then amounts to 0.5 W. At rest, in “on” mode (screen on, between two coffees for example), we have measured 1.1. W, which is very reasonable.

The electricity bill will therefore increase by about 15 cents per month for a user who runs 3 espressos and 3 long coffees per day.

Noise

Automatic coffee makers with a grinder are noisy appliances and Krups Evidence is no exception. However, without being particularly discreet, it is not the one that stands out the most in our comparison. The sound level reaches 56 dB during the rinsing, 66 dB during the grinding of the beans and 58 dB during the extraction of the coffee. For gentle awakenings, we may prefer the Beko CEG7425B .

CONCLUSION

The Krups Evidence is an automatic coffee maker with an easy-to-use grinder, which is easy to maintain. In addition, we appreciated its speed of execution. However, it suffers from the absence of a receptacle for ground coffee or the inability to remove the extractor for advanced maintenance. In addition, the application on mobile terminal does not do much. In the end, its price in terms of the performances delivered clearly does not plead in its favor.
