Best iRobot Braava Jet Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:
Launched at € 249, the Braava Jet 240 succeeds iRobot’s Braava sweeping robots. Its navigation system has evolved, but above all it is capable of spraying water to wash the floors using a wipe, while rubbing them.
Presentation
Evolution of the Braava 380 sweeping robot , the Braava Jet 240 goes a little further: it automatically recognizes the wipe installed by the user, each of the three colors corresponding to a function: dry sweeping, wet sweeping and washing (water spray and wipe that vibrates to rub floor). This last function is new. In terms of navigation too, iRobot has developed its robot, which is now able to move without any prior installation – iRobot abandons the small NorthStar cube that accompanied the Braava 380. This Braava Jet is certainly small and capable of sneaking around, but do not get carried away, iRobot is intended for bathrooms, kitchens and toilets. Indeed, it is only capable of covering around twenty square meters. Finally, it is now connected and can be controlled from a dedicated application.

Convenience of use
The iRobot Braava Jet 240 is even smaller than its predecessor. It is only 17 cm wide and just over 8 cm thick. It comes with a battery to recharge on an external charger (to limit contact between electricity and water).
The only manipulation to do before using it is therefore to insert the battery into it, then slide a wipe into it; possibly pair it with a Bluetooth smartphone, which is not essential.
Triggering cleaning could not be simpler: just put the robot in position – namely in a corner of the room, about 30 cm on each side, and start cleaning by pressing the single “clean” central button.
Well seen from iRobot, the wipe is detected automatically and sets the mode. This is very practical and makes the control panel considerably lighter. There are three colors of wipes. The white corresponds to a dry sweep, the orange to a wet sweep (spraying of a little water) and finally the blue offers washing, with a more consequent spray of water. In the latter two cases, the tank on the side of the device must be filled with lukewarm water. The wipes are impregnated with a detergent product.
Unlike the Braava 380, there is no need to install a cube to help the robot find its way in space. This plug-and-play aspect is appreciable.
It is also possible to use the iRobot Home application, common with that of the Roomba 980. Important difference however: while the Roomba is connected by Wi-Fi and its cleaning can therefore be launched from anywhere, the Braava Jet is connected via Bluetooth. It is a deliberate choice of iRobot related to security reasons, this robot working with water.
Interview
If all the water has not been used at the end of a wash or wet sweep cycle, it is better to empty it to avoid stagnation, but this drain is not specially planned. So turn the robot over and shake it. The Braava Jet being light (1.2 kg), it is not infeasible, but we have known more practical.
A grid is installed at the entrance of the tank and the limescale should not pass through the water spray system. Besides, it is used with tap water.
We appreciate the wipe ejection system: a small button allows them to fall directly into the trash, avoiding putting hands on them when they are dirty.
iRobot offers reusable wipes that can be machine washed (not supplied). For a complete wash and to remove stains, it seems more advisable to use at least from time to time disposable wipes (impregnated with detergent), especially if the use of iRobot Braava Jet must replace the passage of mop and / or the use of a steam mop.
And in this case, the wipes cost a certain amount: € 11 for 10; 20 € both if it is reusable wipes. So count around € 1 per use.
Navigation system
The Braava Jet sails in a zigzag, bypassing the obstacles it encounters before continuing its original trajectory.
The navigation is a little different depending on whether it is sailing in sweep or in wash / wet sweep mode. In fact, to avoid spraying water on furniture or baseboards, it advances, moves back and then sprays water if possible. At no time did he spray water on our furniture or baseboards. These additional movements explain that in these modes, the Braava Jet cleans smaller areas (iRobot announces approximately 20 m² against 25 m² in dry sweeping). Note that in washing mode, it moves forward and backward while also moving to the sides to wash the entire area.
The coverage of surfaces is good the robot is doing very well, unless it is opened too large a surface. For example, we tried to let him go into our whole apartment without him being able to finish a full cycle and therefore without finishing cleaning an entire room. The use of the virtual wall is recommended.
It is able to orient itself as well in a room without lighting as in a sunny room. This is a good point since it is intended for bathrooms, toilets … rooms in which there is not always a window.
The Braava Jet does it effectively in the end, provided that it is not given too large an area.
It handles obstacles correctly, despite a slight tendency to bump into walls or furniture. We also noted that it sometimes pushed back certain pieces of furniture, notably the doors. If they are not closed, he pushes them and sometimes goes into a room where he should not have gone; better close the door or use the virtual wall.
Washing efficiency
Here we cannot speak of aspiration but of sweeping or washing efficiency. Regarding dry sweeping or wet sweeping, no surprise: the coverage of surfaces being good, we get good results – as with the Braava 380. Note all the same that in these two modes (white or orange wipe), there this is not about washing. This keeps the parts clean by dusting or removing animal hair. Compared to the wet sweeping of the Braava 380, this mode of the iRobot Braava Jet therefore leaves a pleasant “clean” smell.
This pleasant scent also spreads after going into washing mode (blue wipes). We can say that it does the job and rather very well. The vibration of the wipe, its moistening and the systematic passage of the robot do their work. Our white tiles have been perfectly free of coffee and “water” stains while no trace is left on the parquet. Finally, we appreciate that the amount of water dispensed is well dosed. A short drying time is necessary, but the floors are far from soggy.
Noise
The Braava 380 is perfectly silent. It is even possible to operate it during the night, without disturbing the sleep of the inhabitants. In some modes, the iRobot Braava Jet 240 is slightly noisier. His movements are always just as silent. But the vibration of the wipe in washing mode increases the noise level (46 dB), as does the projection of water which makes a “robotic” sound, occasionally raising the noise level (53 dB).
It remains discreet and, if we avoid making it work in the bedroom while we sleep, it can work in a room next to it without problem or in the presence of the inhabitants of the home.
Autonomy
We measured a consumption of 5.3 W under load, which is not much. When the li-ion battery is charged, the consumption is not zero – damage -, but it is very low (0.1 W). In addition, these low consumptions are to be put in perspective with the very fast charge (only 2 hours). That said, autonomy is not very important either: 60 min.
CONCLUSION
Do not be fooled: if you want to stop passing the mop in your loft, go your way. The iRobot Braava Jet is really only intended for “restricted” spaces (around 20 m²). If you limit your action to toilets, a bathroom, a kitchen, even a small bedroom, and if you are ready to assume the cost of the wipes, the Braava Jet does its job very well. All the promises are kept and we particularly appreciate the effectiveness of the mode offering floor washing.
