Best Ecovacs Deebot 900 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

Ecovacs has established itself a little more on the robot vacuum cleaner market by launching its Deebot 900, which is the third vacuum cleaner from the Chinese manufacturer to integrate a mapping system. In addition, this new version is able to provide methodical navigation and adapt its suction power according to the ground on which it passes.

Presentation

The Ecovacs Deebot 900 – or D900 for friends and family – is the latest addition to the Chinese manufacturer’s catalog. Launched at € 449.99, this robotic vacuum cleaner slowly comes into  contact with the Xiaomi Roborock S50 with its accessible positioning and its detailed technical sheet. Thus, it embeds a real-time mapping system thanks to its laser rangefinder, offers methodical navigation and an application authorizing the creation of virtual beacons.

Convenience of use

Ecovacs chooses a round shape for all its robot vacuum cleaners, which is quite common. As is generally the case with the manufacturer’s robots, this device is surmounted by a laser rangefinder and therefore reaches an overall height of 7 cm. Rather fine, it can ensure the cleaning of the lowest furniture. Entirely coated with white plastic – like the Roborock S50 from Xiaomi for that matter – the Deebot presents quality finishes and the assembly inspires confidence.

On the upper part of the robot, only one physical key appears: “Auto”. It starts the robot or pauses it. All the other functions are accessible from the application, as we will see below. Point too many LEDs either, except that which indicates whether the robot is connected or not.

Connectivity and the Ecovacs application

The configuration of the device to the Wi-Fi network is innate and takes place smoothly. Quite ergonomic, the application allows classic functions such as weekly programming, remote launching of the device or even access to cards produced by the robot.

But one of the functions that we particularly appreciate is its ability to map in real time, allowing the user to observe the evolution of the robot during the cleaning cycle. After each pass, the application provides a fairly precise map of the environment in which the robot has circulated and if desired, the user can then install virtual beacons to limit access to certain places. Note that it is impossible to install virtual tags during the cleaning cycle; it must be done before starting a cleaning. It is also possible to create cleaning zones (approximately 1 m²) so that the Deebot only cleans certain spaces. The maps provided by the robot are easy to read and allow us to

The application ignores directional keys that would allow you to control the robot vacuum cleaner as you would with a remote-controlled car. In addition, it is not possible to activate additional cleaning modes. Only a “continuous cleaning function” authorizes this Deebot to return to the charging station when the battery is empty and to automatically resume its suction cycle.

Finally, congratulate Ecovacs for this very practical functionality, that which reports on the state of the various elements of the robot vacuum cleaner. From the parameters, it is possible to follow the lifespan of the accessories and to obtain maintenance advice for the side brushes, the main brush and the HEPA filter.

At each difficulty, the robot does not fail to send alerts to the user’s smartphone to inform him of its state.

Interview

In terms of maintenance, this Ecovacs Deebot 900 uses the same codes as its predecessor , the Deebot R95MKII . This is how the two side brushes for clearing the corners are now only recessed, and no longer screwed. The same goes for the central rotary brush which is also no longer screwed, unlike that of the  Deepoo D68 . This nesting system is much easier to extract and put back. Very unfortunate point, the waste tends to accumulate in the orifice of the vacuum cleaner rather than in its collector, which compromises the maintenance of the device.

The collector, with a capacity of 0.3 l, is easily accessible by lifting the cover on the upper part. It is decorated with a small handle which ensures a better grip. The mouth of the collector is preceded by a HEPA filter which is easily dislodged. Behind this filter, there is another filter in the form of a small grid intended to retain lint and thick dust. By pulling this part, the user can finally empty the collector.

Navigation system

The Ecovacs Deebot 900 performs a zigzag trajectory. Our video (see link below) testifies to his passage in our laboratory which he travels in length. If this cleaning seems methodical, we can however surprise him to iron twice in the same place. We can be reassured however, his rather comfortable autonomy allows him to carry out this task easily. The navigation system is quite precise, the D900 providing rather good coverage of surfaces.

If we could find fault with the navigation and obstacle management of the R95MKII, those of the D900 are rather well optimized. Falling point of the stairs as his elder may have suffered, which is a very good thing. However, we reiterate this astonishing observation already observed on the Xiaomi robot: the D900 does indeed perceive the finest obstacles (such as the feet feet of chairs). However, he almost always comes up against obstacles, but very gently, without jeopardizing the furniture.

Trapped under a large table (meeting) and 60 feet of chairs (15 chairs x 4 feet = 60 feet), the D900 managed to vacuum as much as possible and get out of this labyrinth without any problem. This service is all the more astonishing as beneath this same table, nonchalantly dragged electric cables, first seen by the robot and then bypassed. It is not optimal, we agree, but we prefer this behavior rather than a forced suction of electric wires that any robot could damage or in which it could become blocked.

Aspiration

Our comments will be a little less complimentary on the suction performance side where the D900 has revealed some weaknesses, especially on thick carpet. After cleaning for 7 min 10 s, the robot was only able to pick up 30% of the test materials, after which it returned gently to its base. This lamentable result – which we could observe on the video in particular – testifies to the ineffectiveness of the Deebot on this surface.

On fine carpet it is much better. After vacuuming the surface for 5 min 30 s, the D900 managed to recover 88% of the waste. Recall that on this surface, the Xiaomi robot absorbed 93% of the material in 5 min 20 s.

On hard ground, the results are mixed: 71.6% in 5 min 40 s. It is just enough to obtain a perfectly cleaned surface and the user will have to restart cleaning to make sure that no dust has been forgotten.

The suction performance deployed by the Ecovacs Deebot 900 is clearly not up to that of the Xiaomi Roborock S50.

Noise

The Deebot 900 is not among the noisiest vacuum cleaners in our comparison. On the contrary. Its measured sound level varies between 57 dB (A) and 60 dB (A). Just enough to cover a conversation, whose noise level is estimated at around 60 dB (A).

Autonomy

The autonomy announced by the manufacturer is estimated at 1h40. For our part, we observed that the Deebot 900 ran out of steam after 1 hour 10 minutes. This remains correct and appreciable for covering large areas. However, it takes 4 hours to fully charge.

CONCLUSION

The Ecovacs Deebot 900 corrects certain errors observed on the R95MKII, however sold more expensive. Some promises from the Chinese manufacturer are being realized (methodical navigation system, obstacle management, rich and ergonomic application). If it rather provides good coverage of surfaces, we can regret the suction performance on thick carpet but also on hard floor – and for a vacuum cleaner, it’s still the minimum expected. So yes, the Deebot 900 will do its job without any problem. But it is better to launch it twice in succession for an optimal result. And for those who have thick carpets or long pile carpets: go your way instead.
