Plantronics enters the battle of true wireless intras with the BackBeat FIT 3100, a model launched at 150 € which targets sports souls looking for 100% wireless headphones that isolate as little as possible.

Presentation

To design its very first true wireless infrared model, Plantronics drew heavily on the design of the BackBeat FIT 2100, the successor to the very popular Backbeat FIT launched in 2016. The manufacturer simply removed the neck strap. We get two earphones with a singular look, with a semi-in-ear part and a large hook.

Ergonomics

The assembly is neat and seems to say the least robust. During our test period, which included regular sports sessions, among other things, we did not notice any signs of weakness or faulty assembly. Although there are a few small assembly marks, the finishes are relatively neat. Nothing to say about the transport / refill case in terms of manufacturing and finishing. It is not very compact, but it is robust and well designed.

The BackBeat FIT 3100 are primarily intended for sports and are able to resist water and perspiration (IP57 certification). The flexible silicone hook is directly integrated into the earphone chassis. Only the semi-intra red tip, also made of silicone and available in one size, is detachable. The chassis of the earphone itself is protected by a matt plastic shell, while the button with the manufacturer’s logo has a shiny plastic coating. This last part is a real fingerprint magnet, and the silicone elements quickly retain dirt. Better to maintain them regularly to avoid disappointments.

The installation of the headphones is easy once you have taken the hand and the maintenance is excellent thanks to the hook / stabilizer combo. For regulars of semi-intras or classic intras, it takes a little time to get used to the particular contact and the total absence of insulation of the BackBeat FIT 3100. This model keeps its promises regarding the maintenance and the very low insulation passive. However, the sensations of comfort vary depending on the morphology of the users.

Audio

The Plantronics Backbeat FIT 3100 deliver decent sound, and don’t expect much more from them.

This model is very open, we are not surprised by the timidity of the bass and the complete absence of extreme bass. Indeed, the good reproduction of these frequencies requires a minimum of insulation on this kind of product. However, the BackBeat FIT 3100 poses another problem: that of the positioning of the headphones in relation to the duct. As we mentioned above in the comfort paragraph, this positioning varies according to the morphology of the users. It is therefore difficult for them, in this context, to offer the same sound reproduction for all. 

We have therefore tried to give you a little overview with our measurements. On most of the feedback we have had, the sound experience is closer to the measure with the dotted line in navy blue. We therefore have totally absent bass extremes and a lack of bass. This is even more obvious when you leave a calm environment: the surrounding noises (wind tunnel, motors, wind blowing …) mask the little bass reproduced by the headphones. In most cases, therefore, we mainly perceive the second part of the audible spectrum, especially the high-midrange.

CONCLUSION

The Backbeat FIT 3100 partially fulfill their mission. That of offering a 100% wireless listening solution with very little insulation cut for sports. They are very pleasant to use and are accompanied by an excellent application. However, this is not enough to make them essential. Because they miss their subject in terms of sound performance and have certain connection stability problems. Even if you are not too attentive and looking for a model of this type at all costs – still very rare today – take the time to try them before succumbing.
