Best MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2021:
The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X is aimed at gamers concerned about having a silent graphics card. The cooling system is not the only advantage of the card which is also “overclocked” and equipped with LEDs.
MSI’s Gaming X series are often quite well built. With its variant of the Radeon RX 5700 XT , the manufacturer does not seem to want to deviate from the rule and offers a graphics card both massive – height of 2.5 PCI slots, 30 cm in length – and really very heavy with its 1 , 4 kg on the scale. The finish is also very good, with a plastic casing combining matt black surfaces with gray imitating brushed aluminum. The whole is crossed by a few red contours for a card that ultimately aims to be quite sober from a design point of view.

If the Gaming Z series are still the models of choice for those who want to have a lot of fun with LEDs, this Gaming X still has a lighting system. This is however limited to the MSI logo placed on the edge of the card. This lighting is managed by the brand’s Mystic Light software. This allows you to juggle between different effects and colors, but also to coordinate the whole with the lighting of other products.
This lighting coordination system is very pleasant since it avoids the nightclub effect in its tower. In fact, any component or peripheral is now entitled to its Led system, whether it be motherboards, CPU coolers, random access memories, including SSDs, boxes, fans or even headsets and keyboards , or even the screens. It is in this kind of environment that Mystic Light makes sense since it will allow to obtain homogeneous light effects.
Fortunately, software compatibility does not stop with MSI products. The company has thus allied itself with different manufacturers so as to be able to control their lighting: Corsair, HyperX, BitFenix, Fractal, Cooler Master, Antec, SteelSeries or Thermaltake to name a few. A compatibility list is available on the MSI website.
On the construction side, MSI uses its Twin Frozr 7 system that we have already encountered on the GeForce RTX 2070 Gaming Z , for example. Solid and well designed, this system is based on the use of two imposing aluminum fin radiators. These fins also have a fairly specific profile – with alternating ripples – which, according to the manufacturer, would improve the air flow from the fans.
The first of the two radiators overlooks the graphics chip. This is in contact with an anodized copper plate, which is itself in contact with six copper heat pipes – pipes containing a specific gas and whose interest is to distribute the heat released over all the fins. These heat pipes also run through the second radiator which, for its part, is positioned above the supply stage. These components are thus in contact with said radiator using an anodized copper plate.
The memory chips are for their part in contact with a metal plate which thus plays the role of dissipator. A second plate is present on the back of the card ( backplate ). Contrary to what we are used to, it is not just a decorative plate since it is in contact with the printed circuit of the graphics card at GPU level. Enough to help a little with thermal evacuation.
Two axial fans are responsible for cooling the entire card. Called “Torx 3.0”, these fans have blades with a specific profile. As often, the goal is to maximize the air flow and reduce noise pollution.
Factory frequency and manual overclocking
Gaming X version requires, MSI operated a factory overclocking of the graphics chip – the memory does not benefit from any refinement. The operation is not out of the ordinary, the maximum achievable frequency goes from 1,905 MHz to 1,980 MHz. However, MSI expects an average gaming frequency of 1,870 MHz, again 75 MHz better than the AMD reference model.
After thirty minutes of uninterrupted play in a closed case, we noted an average GPU frequency of 1,930 MHz with peaks at 1,975 MHz. It is nevertheless much better than the reference model whose real average is at 1825 MHz – for peaks at 1860 MHz.
Weak point of the benchmark Radeon RX 5700 XT , noise pollution is well contained here. During the play sessions, the breath of the ventilation is clearly noticeable, but it remains very little disturbing, even in a calm environment. Playing on speakers rather than headphones will be uncomfortable, even with games that are fairly quiet or poor in sound effects.
At rest, we appreciate the Zero Frozr system which cuts the ventilation as soon as the graphics chip is below 60 ° C. No noise and savings over the life of the fans.
The increase in the operating frequency is not without consequence on the electric consumption. With 259 W of average, the card thus draws much more juice than the reference model which is “limited” to 220 W. For example, a GeForce RTX 2060 Super draws 175 W of average.
Performance in games
The factory overclocking being quite light, the gain in games remains after all quite measured. In WQHD – target definition of this card – the gain is 3% on average and does not exceed 4% on the other definitions tested (Full HD and 4K). This allows the GeForce RTX 2006 Super to be exceeded by a short head – at least the models not “overclocked” – with an advance which can climb to 7% in WQHD.
- Very discreet in games.
- Ventilation stopped at rest.
- Good temperature management.
- Quality of the finish.
- Fairly light factory overclocking.
- Memory not overclocked.
- Power consumption up sharply.
MSI adapts very well to the Radeon RX 5700 XT by offering a successful Gaming X version. The result is a qualitative and low-noise graphics card. It is accompanied by a LED lighting system which is certainly discreet, but which is integrated into the Mystic Light ecosystem so as to standardize the lighting of the various elements of a computer.
