What to look for
Construction
This laptop from HP is part of the Envy range and we therefore expect a classy design and an exemplary level of finish. This is clearly the case here, the machine being generally flawless on this point. The all-aluminum chassis retains very few fingerprints, the hinge looks very solid and the metal touch on the back brings extra luxury.
When you open the machine, you discover a large surface dedicated to the keyboard, which includes a numeric keypad. The keys are well spaced, the typing is quite precise despite a fairly short stroke. However, the reduced size of the “Enter” key causes a lot of typos. The touchpad , surrounded by a silver border, is a good size and offers precise gliding. On the other hand, it sounds a little hollow when you tap it (for the double click, in particular), while the right click sometimes has a hard time engaging.
On the connection side, it’s classic and efficient: 3 USB 3 ports, 1 USB Type-C port, an SD card reader, an HDMI output and a jack. The set, on the left and right sides, is very accessible.
The HP Envy 15 does not heat up very much: during a stress test , there is a hot point of 47 ° C at the front in the lower left part of the screen, and only 40.1 ° C below the chassis . These good figures are accompanied by a reduced breath, which does not exceed 39 dB when the Unigine Heaven benchmark is rotated for 1 hour.
Screen
This HP Envy 15 benefits from a brilliant IPS touchscreen of 15.6 inches, displaying a Full HD definition (1920 x 1080 px). First of all, small flat on the choice of a touch screen, very little useful on 15 inches and which suddenly prevents the use of a mat screen, much more readable.
Except for this remark, it must be admitted that this screen is of very good quality and very bright (305 cd / m²). Its contrast ratio (860: 1) is quite good, but not transcendent either. The colorimetry is also good, without being exceptional. The Delta E (difference between the actual colors and the displayed colors, considered to be very good below 3) rises to 5.3 and the color temperature is 6,230 K, a figure fairly close to the norm at 6,500 K. Nothing to report on the gamma curve, stable, sign of deep blacks and well defined whites.
Performances
The HP Envy 15 is equipped with a low-consumption Intel Core i7-6560U processor. It is a CPU engraved in 14 nm and equipped with two cores, for frequencies varying from 2.2 to 3.2 GHz. Our power index, based on a series of benchmarks, is quite good and displays a score extremely close to that obtained by a Core i7-6500U, and not very far from that of a Core i5-6300HQ.
You will therefore be comfortable in many tasks (advanced office automation, light video editing, photo editing, web surfing, video …). Here, versatility is paramount.
Games
It is an Intel Iris 540 iGPU that manages the graphics part of the HP Envy 15 and so we should not expect incredible performance in games. Our power rating is therefore barely higher than that of an Intel HD Graphics 520.
In practice, do not expect to launch The Witcher 3 in Ultra graphics mode. You will have to settle for a few titles that are not very greedy (some MOBA, pixel-art games) or quite old.
Mobility / Autonomy
With a weight of 2.13 kg and a thickness of 1.79 cm, we can not say that the Envy 15 is a model of lightness of compactness. On this point, it does worse than the Dell XPS 15 (1.98 kg) or the MSI GS60 (1.98 kg). Note that, here, the touch screen tends to weigh down the machine.
The autonomy is good for a 15 inch. Our reading test under Netflix (brightness at 200 cd / m², under Chrome, headphones plugged in) ran for 5:07. A very good figure compared to the competition of the same format: the MSI GS60 only takes 1:51, the Dell XPS 15 3:40, and the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 4:23. It therefore comes out on top and promises around 7 hours of office use.
Audio
The headphone output of the HP Envy 15 is of excellent quality: the distortion is very low (0.006%) and the output power is high (130 mVrms). The entire sound spectrum is very well reproduced.
Not surprisingly, the speakers are much less convincing (graphic above). In the ear, the power is correct, but the bass and treble shine by their absence. Mediums are present, as well as a few high-midrange. Only the voice passes correctly.
Final Thought
In conclusion, the HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-inch Laptop stands out with its powerful processor, sleek design, and versatile functionality. The HP Envy 15-inch x360 2-in-1 Laptop offers a balance of performance and portability, with added security features. The HP Pavilion 15 Laptop impresses with its powerful processor, ample RAM, and sharp display. The HP Envy x360 2-in-1 15.6″ Touch-Screen Laptop provides versatility in a compact package. Lastly, the 2019 Newest HP Pavilion 15 Business Laptop offers affordability without compromising on essential features. Consider your specific needs and priorities to find the ideal laptop that suits your requirements.
