Best Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80 mm f / 2.8 R LM OIS W Macro Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:

We can say that this optic was expected and sorely lacking in the Fujifilm catalog which, until now, could not appeal to lovers of macro photography. It is now a thing of the past with this 80mm macro f / 2.8.

Presentation

This Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80 mm f / 2.8 R LM OIS W Macro, equivalent to a 127.5 mm (1.5x conversion coefficient) is composed of 16 lenses distributed in 12 groups and includes 1 aspherical lens, 3 ED glasses and 1 Super ED glass. The objective displays a maximum aperture of f / 2.8 associated with a circular diaphragm with 9 lamellae. Macro requires, the reproduction ratio is 1: 1 with a minimum focusing distance of 25 cm.

Of course, the lens is equipped with optical stabilization advertised as being able to compensate up to 5 EV. The development is ensured by a linear motorization adapted to the video. Two separate groups are in charge of focusing to optimize the speed of autofocus. The lens is cut for the field with weather protection, including fluorite treatment on the front lens.

Getting started

This objective is very successful! It is above all a beautiful object that we take pleasure in looking at and taking in hand. As with other Fujinon lenses, there is a relatively sober and refined design. He is quite discreet, which is not a bad thing. The optics have an all-metal construction of the most beautiful effect and delivering a feeling of robustness.

On this point, when taking it in hand, it is true that feeling the optical stabilization block moving inside the lens can be surprising. Don’t worry, it’s completely normal. The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80 mm f / 2.8 R LM OIS W Macro is all that is most armed against the weather and is therefore designed for field use.

This perspective is quite impressive and massive. Count on the 750 g scale, a length of 13 cm and a diameter of 8 cm. Mounted on a case of the caliber of an XT2, it tends to unbalance the whole. The use of a grip may be preferable. On this point, it is a little better with the XH1, more imposing.

More

The single adjustment ring allows manual focus control. It is very wide and comfortable to use. Its fluidity is perfect. It may be a bit harsh, but it is essential in macro, a discipline where the precision of the focusing is vital because of the very shallow depths of field. Unfortunately, it does not have stop marks or indication of focus distance. On the side, there is a switch allowing to limit the entire focusing range, from 50 cm to infinity and from 25 cm to infinity. Fujifilm forces, we find a nice adjustment ring of the diaphragm notched to 1/3 of IL. The latter offers an automatic position which allows this setting to be given to the housing.

This Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80 mm f / 2.8 R LM OIS W Macro is compatible with the two focal converters 1.4x (171mm equivalent) and 2x (244mm equivalent). It comes with a sun visor and a protective cover.

Lab tests

We tested the lens with a Fujifilm XT2 with APS-C sensor of 24 Mpx and a definition of 6000 x 4000 px. Each pixel therefore measures 3.9 µm aside. The minimum aperture recommended to avoid diffraction problems is therefore f / 11!

The performance of this 80 mm is simply excellent. The objective delivers very sharp images from the largest f / 2.8 aperture, and this on all the areas of the image. The level of dive in the center at f / 2.8 is already almost at the maximum. It remains almost constant (with a few minor deviations) up to f / 11. Beyond that, the sharpness begins to decrease due to diffraction and the images are still fully usable at f / 16. In terms of homogeneity, at the largest apertures there is a difference between the center, 2/3 of the images and the extreme edges. This offset settles as we close the diaphragm to become close to excellence at f / 8.

The focal

Here is what you get with the 80mm mounted on a hybrid equipped with an APS-C sensor. By applying a conversion coefficient of 1.5x, we obtain a 120 mm equivalent. This type of focal is above all thought for the macro and allows to keep a reasonable distance with its subject. This lens is also quite well suited for portraits.Show EXIF

The vignetting

The vignetting is quite light, but very present and especially at the largest openings. By closing a little (f / 5.6), it disappears and becomes negligible. At the largest f / 2.8 aperture, it is fairly incoming, progressive, but remains light. At f / 4, it affects only the extreme corners of the images.

Stabilization

We tested the freehand stabilization in the laboratory on a subject positioned at around 3 m. Our results show that we can easily gain 4 EV compared to the theoretical exposure time of 1/200 s, so take a 1/8 s photograph. Count 1 or 2 It less in macro.

Verdict

It is impossible not to recommend this lens which will seduce Fujifilm hybrid users who want a macro lens designed for the field. Indeed, the presence of an optical stabilization makes it possible to design close-up shots by freehand. We can gain 2 Il at the ratio 1: 1 and 4 IL in normal use, portrait type for example. In addition, the reinforced construction of the lens makes it comfortable in poor conditions for shooting in the wild.

The optical quality is excellent. The behavior of the objective is exemplary, and this from the greatest opening. We can just blame him for a slight lack of homogeneity between the center, 2/3 of the images and the extreme edges with the largest openings. To complete this pretty picture, the vignetting is very discreet and the distortions absent.

STRONG POINTS

  • Design
  • Manufacturing quality
  • General optical quality (level of sharpness, homogeneity and behavior)
  • Efficient optical stabilization (4 normal EV, 3 macro EV)
  • Beautiful depth of field effects
  • Low vignetting
  • No distortions

WEAK POINTS

  • Slightly heavy weight and size

CONCLUSION

We must admit, this Fujifilm Fujinon XF 80 mm f / 2.8 R LM OIS W Macro is almost perfect in every way: design, manufacturing quality, handling, optical quality, optical stabilization performance. It will delight lovers of macro and / or portraits.
