Best Logitech G920 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals & Sales 2020:
Designed for Xbox One and PC, the G920 is based on the G29 (for PS4, PS3 and PC). It is distinguished mainly by its controls adapted to the console of Microsoft and of course by the games with which it is compatible – Forza Motorsport 6 is of course the ideal title to take full advantage of the qualities of this new steering wheel.
Presentation
Like its twin brother the G29, the G920 picks up the basics of the previous G27 , which had delighted PS3 and PC players a few years ago – the Xbox 360 had unfortunately not taken advantage of Logitech’s expertise at time. With a new generation of consoles, new strategies, and Logitech offers this time its new steering wheel in two versions and tackles both the PS4 with the G29 and the Xbox One with this G920. The battle is not won in advance, however, since a certain Thrustmaster has comfortably occupied the field with his TX and its various Xbox One compatible versions for several months already.

A well-known base
The G920 is practically identical to the G29, itself very close to the ancestor G27. It thus has two motors in its base, connected to a drive system by helical gears.
Unlike the latest generations of Thrustmaster (T300 RS, TX) and Fanatec (ClubSport Wheel Base) flywheels, Logitech preferred to stay on brushed and non- brushless motor technology , probably for development cost reasons, since the G29 and G920 do not evolve much compared to the G27. This technological choice is unfortunately a little disappointing – we will come back to this in more detail below, when we talk about practical tests.
No regrets regarding the accuracy of detection of rotation – over a range of 900 °, or two and a half turns – we find a Hall effect sensor (magnetic field) ensuring both precision and longevity (no friction).
As for the G29, the user manual comes down to a sheet of A4 paper with explanatory diagrams for making the connections (3 cables to be connected under the steering wheel, a power supply and a USB connection on the console). The manufacturer invites you to go to a web page dedicated to the G920 to download documentation in PDF format as well as the drivers for Windows. The wheel is also modeled on that of the G29.
We thus find the central aluminum core with three branches from the G27and the leather covering. The G920 does not, however, incorporate an LED indicator of engine speed or +/- buttons or a dial with central button. We also lose, and it is stranger, the LT and RT buttons on the Xbox One controller, even though the G29 integrates the PlayStation L1 and R1 equivalents well.
A pedal still as convincing
If it decided to remove the gear lever, Logitech did not seek to reduce costs at the bottom bracket, thus avoiding to design a new more basic one. The G920 retains the very good pedal of the G27, with its three metal pedals, each of different hardness. The brake pedal is thus the hardest of the three due to a firmer spring and a rubber part which reduces its stroke. Identical in shape, the clutch pedal is more flexible. Finally, slightly behind the other two – and therefore further from the driver – the accelerator pedal is of course the most flexible.
If you can not choose the firmness or the stroke of the pedals, you can still adjust the distance between them, which can be useful for big feet or when use of a center bar racing seat (one leg on each side). Thanks to its 3.1 kg and its rubber pads, the crankset holds securely in place on smooth surfaces. A bar adorned with spikes also ensures good grip on carpet. The happy owners of a racing seat will appreciate being able to fix it thanks to the threads provided for this purpose.
Race on Xbox One and PC
Unsurprisingly, the Logitech G920 behaves in exactly the same way as the G29 on PC. We like to take advantage of configuration software to create profiles for our games, in order to assign keyboard keys to the different buttons on the steering wheel. A useful function for games that do not automatically recognize the G920.
With recent titles like Project CARS and Assetto Corsa , no worries, the steering wheel shows great precision, even if we find it less thin and flexible in its effects than a TX from Thrustmaster. Its older technology with brushed motors and gear drive probably has something to do with it (brushless motor and belt drive on the TX), even if that doesn’t explain everything. Indeed, the T500 RS also seems to us a notch above the G29 / G920, even if it shares with them this sensation of drier and more brutal effects than the TX / T300.
The G920 being designed for the Xbox One, we did not wait long before testing it with Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 2 . At least, after having managed to make it work, since it was not initially recognized by the console. Fortunately, simple handling makes it possible to remedy the situation: just unplug the steering wheel, then keep the LSB, “View” and “Xbox” buttons pressed by reconnecting the USB cable to the console; the calibration then starts and you can release the three buttons then in principle enjoy a fully functional steering wheel.
STRONG POINTS
- Convincing three pedal pedal.
- Quite powerful force feedback.
- Compatible with Xbox One and PC.
- Simple and efficient fixing system.
WEAK POINTS
- Force feedback sometimes a little dry.
- Leather finish stitching.
- Movable pallets, no mechanism to make them fixed.
- Gear lever now optional.
CONCLUSION
Like its twin brother the G29 (for PlayStation 3 and 4), the Logitech G920 offers good sensations to fully enjoy racing games on Xbox One. If the Thrustmaster TX remains more convincing with regard to the effects of the steering wheel itself, the Logitech steering wheel catches up with its better finish and especially its good three-pedal crankset. Unfortunately, this translates into a high price, while the gear lever is now optional.
