Beats Powerbeats3 are primarily Bluetooth in-ear headphones for sports use. As such, they promise very good support and solid autonomy combined with a short recharge time. Each headset has two speakers (one for the bass, one for the treble) to optimize the sound rendering.

Beats promises increased resistance to rain and perspiration without relying on an IP certification, unlike the previous model, the Powerbeats2 . Released on the market in 2017 for € 199.95, the Powerbeats3 are now available at around € 150.

Ergonomics

The headphones of Beats Powerbeats 3 are fully protected by plastic. That said, the finishes are neat and no trace of unsightly assembly is visible. A 50 cm flat cable, solid and well attached, connects the two headphones. The earhooks – whose feel is reminiscent of that of rubber – are flexible at their ends and semi-rigid at their base, so that they can be deformed to adapt them to the pavilions of our ears. These intras come in a relatively complete packaging including a silicone carrying case. A (very short) micro-USB cable and four pairs of tips. One pair biflange and three pairs monoflange of sizes S, M and L.

These tips, made of a flexible and soft silicone, are so slippery that they do not maintain themselves in the ear canal, contrary to what one would expect from a pair of ultras. 

Once this is done, the tips remain effectively in place in the entrance of the ear canal, with correct behavior during sports. Even if one always has the impression that they can slip from time to time. The feeling of wearing with the Powerbeats3 in the ears is closer to that of the semi-auricular and it is a little surprising during the first sessions of use. Either way, it’s hard to forget about them completely, even if you take the time to adjust them properly.

Audio

Fortunately, the Beats Powerbeats 3 are based on the new sound signature adopted by Beats on his recent headsets and intras. They therefore manage to find a better compromise between flattery and loyalty than the Powerbeats. 2 , which were sorely lacking in subtlety. We also find this same balance with BeatsX , which offer a sound rendering very close to that of Powerbeats3.

These Bluetooth intras draw a flattering V-shaped response curve, but which is maintained in controlled proportions. The bass and treble are well put forward, but the overall sound rendering still retains a good balance and the timbres are properly respected. The bass is relatively punchy and precise, although there are some overflows in the extreme extremes (they “drag” a little after each attack). On the other side of the audible spectrum, the treble is present and enjoy a very good definition for a product of this type. The extremely well-controlled crosstalk promotes a very precise stereo image. The sound scene unfolds in a very natural way.

The hollow in the low midrange / midrange a little attenuates the round and warm side of the sound reproduction. We therefore perceive above all the seat, the depth coming from the bass. We would have liked them more defined. Combined with being overweight in the midrange around 2 to 3 kHz, this behavior ultimately promotes the sharp, slamming aspect, intelligibility (of voices, among others) and the feeling of clarity. This energetic behavior, however, has the disadvantage of accelerating hearing fatigue at high volume and making certain pieces a little too incisive.

CONCLUSION

The Beats Powerbeats 3 are nice listening companions for sport thanks to their good autonomy, their non-intrusive aspect and their controls which are both complete and intuitive. They deliver a flattering, but relatively well balanced tone. We can cite the BeatsX choker intras , not specially cut for sports, and the true wireless Jabra Elite Active 65t, which require a little more financial investment.
